The Suffolk district attorney‘s office said Tuesday the woman was a Revere resident in her 40s. Her name wasn’t immediately released.

Chelsea police found the woman just after 1 a.m. when they got a call that a woman was lying in the street at Broadway and Congress Avenue.

The district attorney’s office said witnesses told police she had been walking from the direction of nearby Everett Avenue when she fell to the ground.

She was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where she later died.

Her death is being investigated as a homicide.

Police said that a witness told them that the driver apparently knew they hit someone, as the driver briefly stopped before speeding off from the scene.

Witnesses said the victim was thrown and landed in the street and partially rolled under a parked car.

“I heard someone screaming. My mom said call police and I ran over,” said Kiana Rivera.

“It was pretty bad, because I spoke with the police officer and he said it doesn’t look good,” said Beverly Ross, who witnessed the crash.

The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Police said the car, possibly dark green in color, likely had damage to its front end and windshield.
