NEW LONDON, N.H. — A police cruiser’s dashboard camera recorded an unusual proposal for two Colby-Sawyer College graduates.

Matt Van Vliet enlisted the New London Police Department’s help in pulling off an arresting proposal while he and Samantha Labo were in town for a reunion in September.
Police pulled over Van Vliet around 6:34 p.m. on Sept. 20.
“They had us both step out of the car,” Labo said via Skype. “They pretended to put handcuffs on him behind his back. Then the cop started patting him down and pulled something out of his pocket.”
It was an engagement ring. Right there, on the police dash cam, Labo said yes.
“I went from being the most terrified I’ve ever been to probably the most ecstatic,” Labo said.
Labo admitted she was a little upset with her future husband at first, but it was all worth it.
Labo said she had no idea Van Vliet was planning the surprise proposal.
“I figured since we kind of met in prison, it would be kind of appropriate to do it that way,” Van Vliet said.
“It’s not as bad as it sounds,” Labo said with a laugh.
Van Vliet and Labo, who now live in California, met as freshmen at Colby-Sawyer when police stopped by a party.
“We were at a party and it got busted and there was 100 of us and that’s the first night we ever talked,” Van Vliet said.
“I think you guys might have done a report on it,” Labo said.
To clear their records, Labo and Van Vliet passed Breathalyzer tests.
“They let us go after talking to our parents,” Labo said.
Van Vliet and Labo are now trying to pay off their college loans while they plan a wedding for 2015.
