USPS offers $50k reward for suspect information
BOSTON —A United States Postal Service worker was shot in Dorchester Friday night in a robbery attempt, Boston police said.
The postal worker was shot near the Ashmont MBTA station on Bailey Street near Dorchester Avenue before 7 p.m.
On Saturday, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service announced a reward of up to $50,000 for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect.
The worker was in the rear of his mail truck when the shooter tried to steal mail and packages, police said. The two then got into a scuffle, and the postal worker was shot in the wrist.
The shooter hit the victim in the forehead with a handgun and ordered the worker to strip out of his USPS letter carrier uniform, according to police.
With the postal worker still in the rear of the truck, police said the suspect tried to drive away. But the worker was able to open the rear door of the cab and jump out onto Bailey Street, police said.
The mail truck was found nearby in a snowbank on Clermont Street.
After further investigation, police said they determined that the suspect fled in a U-Haul rental van. The van was found at a Sunoco gas station at the intersection of Gallivan Boulevard and Washington Street and towed for evidence.
The postal worker described his attacker as a black man in his 20s, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches, wearing a hooded black jacket and black face mask, police said.
“I can’t believe someone would do that,” said neighbor Antoria Lee. “Our letter carrier is such a sweet guy, he always makes sure we get our packages.”
The postal worker was taken to Boston Medical Center with serious injuries.
Anyone with information should call the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455.

Agency expects to lose $6 billion this year
Times are definitely changing. If you are building a new home, a new office building, or a new Condo complex you no longer have the option of getting door to door mail delivery. You will have to use a cluster mail box delivery system. We all know that the United States Postal Service (USPS) has been struggling for quite some time. Threats of ending Saturday mail delivery, regular increases in postage stamps as well as express mail delivery, are all signs of a failing system. Should this new system become true for all those receiving mail, you might have to be worrying about where your new cluster box location will be. My first concern is for those that are elderly and disabled. Then there are questions about inclement weather and how everyone would get access to their mail then. Not everyone drives and others may not be able to get themselves to the new location, wherever it might be, to pick up their mail. I wonder if the USPS will also find a way to make us pay for this change as well as the actual box we will potential receive our mail in. It’s an expense that I’m not sure many people could afford on top of things like healthcare cost, that they already have problems paying for. I would love to hear what everyone has to say on this. Please leave me your comments to sound of on the topic.
