Remy released day before he allegedly killed girlfriend
BOSTON —Deficiencies in how the district attorney’s office handled assault charges against Jared Remy allowed him to walk free a day before he allegedly killed his girlfriend, an independent review board concluded.
Remy, 35, is accused of fatally stabbing Jennifer Martel at their Waltham apartment on Aug. 15. Authorities said he was covered in blood when they arrested him at the scene.
The attack came a day after Remy was released on his own recognizance after being charged with assaulting Martel on Aug. 13.
The panel found that the domestic violence case could have been pursued more aggressively.
“We found that Remy’s domestic violence criminal history, the facts in the Aug. 13, 2013, police report, and the fact that there was a young child in the home were not given sufficient weight, while the victim’s decision not to come to court to extend the emergency restraining order or to request conditions of release was given excessive consideration in the evaluation,” the report states.
Remy, son of Red Sox announcer Jerry Remy, pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and assault and battery with a deadly weapon in the death of Martel. He was held without bail.
Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan thanked the panel for its work and said her office has” already implemented changes to address the deficiencies identified in the report.”
Ryan said her office has also been involved in ongoing efforts to strengthen laws to protect victims of domestic violence and to increase sentencing options.
