The utility workers, both men, were 150 feet in the air working on electricity lines off the Scenic Highway when the boom collapsed, according to officials. The men died on impact, police said.

The first 911 call reporting the incident at Cape Cod Aggregate Corp. near Scenic Highway came in in the afternoon, police say.

Utility NStar says Joseph L. Boyd III, of Fall River, and John Loughran, 34, of Quincy, had been contracted for an NStar project in Bourne, on Cape Cod.

“I lost my son today, and I love him,” John Loughran said. “He loved line work, he loved being a utility worker and he was doing exactly what he wanted to be doing. He couldn’t have been happier.”

Workers at the scene were shaken.

“Everyone’s in shock,” said Glenn Stone, the chaplain for the Bourne Fire Department. “No one woke up this morning expecting anything like this to happen.”

A representative from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was on the scene.

Police Chief Dennis Woodside said it was not particularly windy at the time of the accident and the ground under the truck appeared to be solid.
