A convicted killer who broke out of a Michigan prison during the Super Bowl then carjacked and kidnapped a woman as he fled was captured in Indiana on Monday, police said.

Indiana State Police confirmed to NBC News that Michael David Elliot was captured Monday evening in LaPorte County, Ind.

Elliot was taken into custody at about 6 p.m. ET after a sheriff’s deputy investigating a stolen vehicle tried to make a traffic stop, police said. The vehicle initially sped off but, after a short chase, was pulled over. At that time, Elliot was identified as the driver and detained, police said.

He was being held in LaPorte County jail.

Elliot’s capture put an end to an intense manhunt underway in Indiana that put several communities on high alert.

Hundreds of officers from multiple agencies were hunting for him after he pried a hole in a fence in a “secure area” at the Ionia Correctional Facility on Sunday night.

He then carjacked an older woman by threatening her with a hammer and box cutter and held her hostage, said Michigan State Police Lt. Mardella Horhn, who described Elliot as “armed and dangerous.”

The woman managed to escape in Indiana. And later, the red Jeep that Elliot stole from her turned up in Shipshewana, Ind., LaGrange County Sheriff’s Office said in an alert.

“Please avoid area,” the alert said, adding that nearby schools were placed on lockdown. Shipshewana is seven miles south of the Michigan border.

Prison guards discovered Elliot was missing at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, but Ionia Department of Corrections Director Dan Heyns said surveillance video shows he probably escaped between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

“It appears that he created a hole at the bottom of the two perimeter fences of the correctional facility and then crawled through those holes,” Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan told The Associated Press in an email.

Elliot traveled to Indiana with his hostage, drove two hours and pulled over for gas in Elkhart County, Ind. While Elliot was pumping gas, the woman pulled out a cell phone she was hiding and called the LaGrange County police around 11:30 p.m., according to a LaGrange County Sheriff’s Office statement.

The woman managed to escape to a gas station bathroom, where she waited for police to arrive, according to the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Office. She was not hurt.

The woman told police that her captor told her he wanted to get far away from Ionia, Mich.

Elliot took off in her red 2004 Jeep Liberty with Michigan license plate 5FTG55, before the police arrived, Horhn said.

Elliot was given life terms for the murder of four people in 1993, according to his MDOC profile.

Elliot killed two women and two men in Bentley Township, Mich., during a plan to steal drug money, according to Michigan court documents. When he couldn’t find the money, he killed the four and set fire to the house where he thought the money was.

He was subsequently charged with four counts of premeditated murder, one count of armed robbery, one count of entry with intent to commit a larceny, one count of arson of a dwelling house and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to court documents.

He has gone by the names Michael D. Delarosa, Michael David Delarosa and Michael David Shreader in the past, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Marlan said all other prisoners at the Ionia Correctional Facility were accounted for and that Elliot escaped without help from other inmates.
