Suspect in Southborough tire slashings arrested

Todd W. Fike

SOUTHBOROUGH, Mass. — Police have arrested the man they say slashed tires on seven vehicles in the parking lot of a Route 9 pub on Sunday after being refused a drink at the bar.

Todd W. Fike, 46, of Framingham was arrested Tuesday evening, Lt. Sean James said. Fike lives at the Jefferson Hills Apartments, an apartment complex on Route 9.

“We appreciate all the assistance from the public in identifying this suspect,” James said. He noted that, in addition to receiving about 20 tips from the general public, the department also received tips from police officers who had seen the man before.

“He was known to area detectives,” James said.

The man was described by witnesses and in police radio broadcasts as standing 6-feet 8-inches tall, weighing 300 to 350 pounds, wearing shorts that revealed a prosthetic leg and driving a blue “ice cream-style” truck. Police also said he spoke with a southern accent.

Witnesses say the man walked into Owen O’Leary’s Restaurant & Pub around 9:30 p.m. Sunday and was refused a drink by a bartender because he looked drunk. A short time later, a bartender saw him out in the parking lot going from car to car slicing and popping tires.

Police say the man slashed tires on seven cars before being spotted, at which time he hopped into a truck and drove away. O’Leary’s Manager Michael O’Brien told The Daily News Monday that the man nearly hit a car as he was pulling out onto Route 9.

James said Fike of 1630 Worcester Road, Apt. 212, has been charged with seven felony counts of malicious or wanton destruction/damaging of property, driving to endanger and disorderly conduct.

James said Framingham police arrested Fike at his home at about 6:20 p.m. without incident. Multiple Southborough officers, including Detective Sean McCarthy, were present.

Fike was being booked Tuesday night at the Southborough station, James said, and is due to be arraigned in Westborough District Court today.
