People advised not to call back mystery numbers

BOSTON — Officials are warning about a new phone scam that might have you thinking twice about returning a missed call.

Watch report

It starts with a single ring and the caller hangs up before you answer.

They’re hoping you call back and that’s when you get scammed. You’re charged $20 for the call, and as much as $9 a minute after that.

To avoid the scam, people should keep an eye out for mystery calls coming from area codes 268, which is Antigua; 809, which is the Dominican Republic; 876 from Jamaica; 284 of the British Virgin Islands; and 473, which is Grenada.

It’s believed the scammers stole lists of numbers and are now calling as many as possible.
