Woman killed while trying to avoid mattress in roadway
BURLINGTON, Mass. — State police are searching for a dump truck that was carrying a mattress that fell off the vehicle and caused a rollover crash in Burlington on Tuesday that claimed the life of a Framingham woman.
The Route 128 crash that involved a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Tundra happened at 3 p.m. and shut down several lanes of southbound traffic for more than an hour.
Police believe the Corolla, driven by a 56-year-old woman, was rear-ended by the Tundra when it slowed to avoid hitting a blue, twin-sized mattress in the roadway. The woman was taken to Lahey Clinic, where she died.
“The whole rear end of that vehicle was smashed in. It was hit by a pickup truck. I wouldn’t even estimate the speeds that they were going on the highway. It was a smaller vehicle, hit by a pickup truck, impacted pretty good. All the way into the back seat,” said Burlington Fire Department Lt. Peter McAnespie.
The driver of the pickup suffered minor injuries.
Police believe the vehicle transporting the mattress continued on Route 128, and officials are now looking for a large dump truck with a white cab. They believe it was carrying multiple mattresses and had black netting or a tarp. Witnesses believe two men were inside.
